COURSE CONTENT

Uncial, Foundation Hand And Roman Capitals

This course is for complete beginners and the experienced calligraphers interested in extending their calligraphic skills and the repertoire of Roman Hands. As a complete beginner you’ll learn the basics of the Uncial, Foundation hand minuscule, Capitals and extensive fundamental skills. Those with established skills will take this versatile traditional hand into a contemporary and lively letter forms. Add serifs, adapting this hand from formal versions through to informal and playful, quirky variations. Change your tools to modern monoline nibs and pens. The capitals, based on roman letter forms, will be transformed into expressive, freely written and lively variations. Study in a mixed ability group where you’ll work at your own level sharing experiences with others as you all apply your learned skills create rewarding projects.​

Italic script and brush pen lettering

Italic is the most valuable and versatile script. This course is for suitable for beginners. For those who wish refresh their letters, and learn how to change and modify to create script variables. Learn step by step to become fluent with this elegant style. Students will learn how to use this script to create various projects applying their new lettering skills and techniques.
Brush Pen lettering basics using the Tombow and Pentel "Touch" brush pens. Develop a basic script to form the foundation for many brush lettering styles. Master the subtle brush pen pressures and gain stroke and letter consistency.

The Six Week Courses are structured for Mixed Ability Groups.
These courses will continue throughout the year building on calligraphic skills.
The program will be structured for both beginners and experienced students.  
There are two choices of course content, Roman Hands which will consist of Uncial and Foundation Hands or Italic Script & Brush Pen
Each student will receive a personalised lesson guide for the course.
These courses have a maximum of 8 students

Two Courses and Two Dates
  • Choose either Wednesday evenings or Saturday afternoons

As the tutor of the 2 Year Calligraphy Course at RMIT University I taught classes mixed ability classes of up to 20 students, 3 different groups, each group studying at a different level. Mixed classes benefit all the students.

Each course program will include:

Getting started: How to set up a desk & work space.
General Pen Care: Maintenance and Cleaning.
Build Your Skills: Exercises with patterns & forming letters stroke by stroke
Calligraphy Styles: Both the Lowercase (minuscule) & Capitals (majuscules)
Style Characteristics: The anatomy of letterforms.
About The Style: Historical and contemporary references.
Info About Materials and Tools: Inks, gouache, metallic inks, papers, pens, nibs. The variety and suitability available, how to use them.
Spacing: letters, words, interline spacing, margins, textures.
Line Ruling: How to measure and rule your guidelines for any style.
Self Critique: How to analyze your writing and improve your own work.
Design: From basic composition techniques to more complex layout methods.
Applied Skills: Homework between lessons. Create a calligraphic project
Research: Developing a future file. Reference containing stuff you like, designs, styles etc

Materials that will be supplied:
  • Pen, A3 paper, Course Booklet to keep.
  • The use of studio supplies, coloured inks, gouaches, gold inks & many varied tools to experiment with in class
  • There's a Coffee machine, Tea, Chai and snacks
What Materials to bring:
  • Your own calligraphy materials if you have them
